UR Medicine Considers Halting Elective Surgeries For Now

There's no decision yet, but UR Medicine is considering halting elective surgeries once the COVID vaccine mandate for health care workers takes effect on September 27th.

The hospitals are preparing for staffing shortages once unvaccinated workers either quit or are fired.

Pausing elective surgeries for at least two weeks could free up staff to focus on critical care areas.

Meantime, URMC's Farmington Urgent Care center will close Sunday because of what are called "significant staffing challenges." Staffers are being redeployed to other facilities.

The Farmington site will be used as an outpatient clinic for high-risk COVID patients.
