Rochester General and Strong Hospitals Say Gates Police Chief Has it Wrong

The Rochester area's two big hospital networks say Gates Police Chief Jim Van Brederode has it wrong.

He said yesterday he's not satisfied with the way Strong hospital handles people brought there after mental hygiene arrests.

He says those patients are being released too soon. And he says his officers will take them instead to Rochester General.

But both hospital systems say state mental health hygiene law prevents them form keeping many patients involuntarily -- and they say it is not accurate to suggest taking patients to one hospital over another will result in better outcomes.
