Two Dead, 14 Injured in Rochester Mass Shooting

UPDATE 7PM: New details about the mass shooting that left two teens dead and sent 14 others to the hospital.

RPD Captain Frank Umbrino says 19-year-olds Jaquayla Young and Jarvis Alexander have been identified as the pair killed in the Pennsylvania Avenue shooting.

Umbrino says the shooting appears to have been caused by an escalating argument at a party.

3 to 4 gunmen sprayed the backyard of the home with about 40 rounds total.

The 14 other shooting victims are expected to survive.

No arrests have been made in the shooting yet.

Acting Rochester Police Chief Mark Simmons calls it "a tragedy of epic proportions." Two people are dead and 14 are injured at area hospitals after gunfire broke out at a house party near Pennsylvania and Goodman Streets early this morning. It's the worst mass casualty shooting in Rochester since the Boys and Girls Club shootings of five years ago.

The dead are a young man and woman, 18-to-22 years old. The 14 injured are at Strong and Rochester General Hospitals, and the chief says they appear likely to recover.

Simmons says they received reports of gunshots shortly before 12:30 this morning and arrived to find at least 100 people running away. They quickly found the deceased and did a neighborhood search to locate the remaining 14 victims. The chief says it's another tragedy where an unsanctioned house party became a recipie for disaster with the addition of alcohol and violence.

Simmons says it's too early to say how many shooters were involved, and the names of the victims are not yet being released. Police will be looking for evidence for many hours.

Mayor Lovely Warren says the city's Pathways to Peace team is on the ground and working with the victims and their families. She says she's begging everyone to stay calm and excercise deep restraint as the RPD investigates what happened and seeks those responsible.
