Investigation Underway After Man Restrained by RPD Officers, Dies

The family of a black Chicago man who died after he was restrained by Rochester police plans to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the city.

Family of 41-year-old Daniel Prude say he died after he was held down by Rochester Police Officers, cuffed and made to wear a spit hood.

Body camera footage from the encounter March 23 shows Prude, naked on a snowy night, being restrained on a street.

Prude's brother says Prude was having a mental episode.

The conduct of the police officers involved is being investigated by the state Attorney General's office. And Black Lives Matter activists want the officers involved to be fired.

Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren says that the AG's investigation is still ongoing, and that nothing can move forward until the AG's case is closed.

Mayor Warren says the family deserves to know what exactly happened. She adds that she has seen the body camera footage, calling it disturbing.

Rochester Police Chief Le'Ron Singletary says after the incident occurred, he called for a criminal investigation and internal investigation. He says as of this time, the officers involved have not been suspended.

UPDATE: 9 people have been arrested at the Public Safety Building in the wake of Wednesday's protests.

27-year-old Ryan Howe has been charged with inciting a riot.

8 others, including organizers Ashley Gantt, Stanley Martin, and Iman Abid, have been charged with trespassing.
