Monroe County Jail Inmate Had Legionnaires Disease

A Monroe County jail inmate has tested positive for Legionnaires disease, forcing the decontamination of his cell and the jail’s air conditioning system. The inmate was treated at Strong Memorial Hospital and all inmates had to be moved from the housing unit.

Legionella bacteria is often spread through water systems, and it was found in the inmate's cell.

Sheriff Todd Baxter is crediting two jail deputies with spotting that the inmate was sick and getting him checked out, discovering the infection.
