Rochester Moves to Lay Off, Furlough City Workers

More than 400 City of Rochester employees will be hit by city cost-cutting measures as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Warren says 17 positions are being eliminated, and 386 employees will be furloughed or will be part of the city's work sharing program. Mayor Warren says these measures mean there will be over $2 Million dollars in savings.

The furloughed employees will be able to collect unemployment and will be eligible to continue their health insurance under the CARES act.

Uniformed members of the Rochester Police and Fire Departments as well as the Emergency Communications Department are unaffected.

Mayor Warren says the city has been working with its unions and notified them ahead of time, but was not able to reach an agreement with them. She says they decided it was best to proceed and says the city will do the best it can by its employees.
