Local Leaders Object To Early Release Of Inmates

Some local leaders are objecting to the early release of some inmates at the Monroe County Jail.

Greece Town Superivisor Bill Reilich says the safety of residents and their families is his top priority, and he was outraged by the release of 51 inmates -- nine of whom are now living at a hotel in Greece.

He says three of the people are sex offenders. And he says he received no advance notice of the plan from Sheriff Todd Baxter.

The sheriff's office says the release was part of the state's effort to slow the spread of the coronavirus, and none of the inmates had symptoms.

Reilich wants the release rescinded and the inmates returned to the jail.
