Rochester Area Schools Close Because of Coronavirus

Officials have made the call to close all Monroe County schools as of Monday after a second coronavirus patient was confirmed in the county.

Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren will announce Support for Children and Families, with city R-Centers and Schools to provide recreation and especially meals for school-age children. That and other information will be announced in a news conference at 10:00 a.m. that we'll carry live here on Newsradio WHAM 1180.

Ontario County has joined Monroe County in declaring a State of Emergency because of the coronavirus. That county's Health Director Mary Beer says there are no confirmed cases yet, but the situation is evolving rapidly and the threat to Ontario County residents is imminent.

Ontario County is closing all school districts including Victor Central. Orleans County announced last night they are closing their schools, and Genesee County and Batavia are closing as well. Wayne County officials are meeting later today to determine a course of action for their county.

MCC is canceling all classes for this coming week although staff still needs to report...and after consulting with the Monroe County Health Department, the YMCA of Greater Rochester says it will suspend operations at all five Rochester-area centers except for childcare. Emergency school age child care will be provided at YMCA facilities.
