Former Republican Congressman Chris Collins has been sentenced on federal insider trading charges.
Collins was sentenced today to 26 months in prison.
In court today his lawyer said he has accepted responsibility and is remorseful.
Collins also spoke in court, apologizing and asking the court to be merciful. The judge in this case telling Collins that what he did was a serious crime.
The sentence is less that what Federal prosecutors wanted -- but more than what the U.S Probation Office had recommended.
Collins pleaded guilty to the charges in October and resigned his seat.
Collins' lawyers had requested he spend no time in custody because they don't believe he is a threat to society.
