Phelps Couple Alleges Road Salt Killed Cows

A Phelps couple's lawsuit alleging that road salt killed their dairy cows is finally going to trial.

John and Jan Fredericks own a farm on the north side of Thruway, east of Manchester. They claim the cows and calves started dying in 2001, and 88 died over four years.

Testing eventually found salt in the well water, and the lawsuit claims road salt was the source.

They have since switched to another water supply.

The D&C reports a geologist will testify the bedrock under the farm helped steer the salt in the groundwater to the well.

The Thruway Authority is denying responsibility.
