Councilman Jose Peo Challenges Mayor Warren With New Legislation

Rochester City Councilman Jose Peo is introducing legislation he says would prevent the mayor's office from using taxpayer dollars to send political mailings to voters.

Peo's resolution would require City Council approval before the city could send a political mailing to voters. Peo's dispute with Mayor Lovely Warren is over her use of city funds last year to send out a mailing to more than 31,000 city residents, pushing for a state takeover of city schools. Warren also recently sent a letter to Charlotte residents, criticizing two columns Peo wrote in a neighborhood association newsletter concerning the development process for the Port of Rochester.

Peo says although he's been a frequent critic of the mayor, she can't be allowed to retaliate with tax dollars against people who challenge her.
