Cuomo Proposes End to 'Pink Tax'

Governor Cuomo is calling for an end to what he calls "the pink tax" -- the higher price women pay for goods and services similar to those purchased by men.

His legislative agenda for the new year includes an end to the disparities.

His bill would prohibit gender-based pricing discrimination for substantially similar or like kind goods and services. The legislation will require certain service providers to post price lists for standard services, and businesses that violate the law would be subject to civil penalties.

According to the data collected in a study in 2015, women's merchandise costs 7 percent on average more than similar items for men, with personal care products for women found to be priced 13 percent higher than men's products.
