Governor Cuomo Proposes Ban on Single-Use Styrofoam Containers

Governor Cuomo is adding a ban on single-use polystyrene food containers to his legislative wish list for the new year.

The ban would also include the polystyrene packaging materials commonly called packing peanuts.

If approved, the ban would take effect in two years.

Cuomo says polystyrene -- sometimes called Styrofoam -- is a common pollutant and public health hazard. It is often used in containers from take-out restaurants.

His bill also would let state regulators take action to limit or ban other packing materials, based on their environmental impact.
