State lawmakers Proposing Legislation Regarding New License Plates

State lawmakers are trying to find a way around the fee associated with a new mandatory license plate replacement policy.

Earlier this week, Governor Cuomo announced plates that are at least 10 years old need to be replaced with newly designed plates next year. That will set affected drivers back 25 dollars.

One piece of proposed legislation would waive fees for replacing a plate due to a design change. Another wouldn't allow the fee to be collected if the original plates are in good shape and the vehicle owner didn't request new ones.

The governor says new plates are needed to help license plate reading machines.
