One Dead Following House Explosion on Illinois Street

An investigation is underway after a home exploded on Illinois Street in Rochester.

Fire officials say crews were called to 64 Illinois Street around 7:30 last night by RG&E, who had reported an odor of natural gas outside the home.

Crews from RG&E were on scene investigating the odor when they noticed a man inside the home who refused to answer his door. As firefighters arrived on the scene the house exploded.

A body was found in the debris a few hours later. Crews will continue to search the debris, as the structure is demolished. No one else was hurt.

The houses on either side of the house that exploded sustained extensive structural damage and will be inspected by the City’s Building Bureau. Several other homes had minor damage.

The cause of the explosion remains under investigation.
