School Budget Rejected in Brighton, Brockport

Voters in the Brighton school district have rejected a proposed budget that included a nearly 4.9 percent tax increase.

55 percent of voters supported the increase, but it needed a 60 percent supermajority because it would have exceeded the state's cap on increases of more than 2 percent.

District officials say they want to hear from voters as they develop a new spending plan. One other school budget in the area was defeated yesterday -- in Brockport. It was the second time in four years that voters there said no to a proposed budget.
