Schumer: Companies Must Give 2-Month Warning Before Layoffs

Senator Schumer wants to close what he says is a loophole in a federal law designed to give workers 60 days notice before a big layoff.

He says the Friendly's restaurant chain used that loophole this month to close 15 upstate locations -- and layoff hundreds of workers -- with no warning.

Schumer says that's just plain wrong

Schumer was joined by laid off workers yesterday at the closed Friendly's in Gates.

He is proposing legislation that would increase the circumstances under which employers must give two months’ notice to their employees of big layoffs.
