Judge Rejects Motion to Dismiss Assault Charge Against RPD Officer

A Rochester judge has rejected a motion to dismiss an assault charge against a city police officer. Suspended Officer Michael Sippel will go on trial in March on the charge he assaulted Christopher Pate last May, after Pate says he provided ID showing he was not a man wanted by police.

Pate said he suffered injuries to his jaw and broken bones in his face. A grand jury indicted Sippel on the misdemeanor charge.

An officer with him at the scene was not indicted.

Mayor Warren said in August that body camera images from the encounter showed egregious conduct by police.
