Rochester Police Officer Accused of Using Excessive Force Pleads Not Guilty

There is a not guilty plea today from the Rochester police officer accused of using excessive force.

Michael Sippel was charged by a grand jury last week with misdemeanor assault. He and Officer Spenser McAvoy were suspended without pay in August for the alleged beating of Christopher Pate in May, in what investigators say was a case of mistaken identity.

Pate said he had already shown the officers his ID before he was subdued with a stun gun, handcuffed and punched in the face.

McAvoy was not charged.
