MCSO Investigating Homicide in Penfield; Attempted Homicide in Riga

A man described as a "person of interest" in a Penfield murder and an attack on a Riga woman has been found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Pennsylvania.

That discovery added to an expanding investigation as Monroe County deputies found a woman dead in a home on Collingsworth Drive in Penfield, and found another woman critically injured a short time later across the county in Riga. Both women had been severely beaten.

Sheriff Todd Baxter says it started with deputies being sent to check the welfare of the Collingsworth Drive victim. They found her dead and determined it was a homicide. Deputies found evidence that led them to a house on Leibeck Road in Riga where they found the second victim, still alive but in critical condition. The second victim is at Strong Memorial Hospital.

Sheriff Baxter says this second victim was the man's mother, and the first victim was his wife.

License plate reader technology led them to identify a vehicle and track it to Pennsylvania. But by then, Pennsylvania State Police had already found the vehicle. It was parked near Erie, Pennsylvania, with the man investigators wanted to talk to dead inside.
