State Parks and Recreation Office Releases 2017 Boating Fatality Numbers

Just in time for this year's boating season, the state parks and recreation office says the state tallied 22 fatalities on the water last year.

That number was unchanged from the year before, and 14 involved unregistered craft such as canoes, kayaks, non-motorized sailboats and stand-up paddle-boards.

Most of those who died were not wearing life jackets. New York’s overall boating fatality numbers have dropped significantly since the 1970s.
