UPDATED: Ongoing Law Enforcement Incident Closes Portion of Thruway

7:30 p.m. UPDATE: An Amherst man is in custody following an incident that shut down I-90 in both directions between exit 47 in LeRoy and exit 48A in Pembroke. 

New York State Police say Monday afternoon they received a “be on the lookout” alert for an emotionally disturbed man driving an SUV in the area of the Thruway in the Town of Stafford. 

Troopers located the vehicle and tried to pull the driver over. After a short police pursuit and lengthy negotiations, the man surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody.  He was taken to the hospital for an evaluation. 

No injuries were reported.

6:30 p.m. UPDATE: The Thruway is now back open.

New York State Police say the Thruway is closed in both directions between exits 47 in LeRoy and exit 48A in Pembroke, for an ongoing law enforcement incident. 

State Police say traffic is being diverted off the Thruway in that area. Authorities are asking drivers to use a different route.
