Gates Car Theft Suspect Captured in Henrietta

Charges are pending after a suspect believed to have stolen a car from a gas station in Gates this morning was arrested this afternoon, after a chase that injured a Monroe County deputy.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office says 29-year-old  Kevin Simpson of Rochester was caught while hiding in a closet at the Continental School of Beauty in Henrietta.

The incident began this morning when Simpson allegedly dumped a car he stole in Rochester at a gas station on Buffalo Road in Gates, then stole another man's Jeep while he was inside paying for his gas. A citizen spotted what looked like the stolen jeep in the parking lot of the Home Depot in Henrietta. When a deputy approached the Jeep, the suspect hit the deputy and his patrol car while driving away. He hit two other cars trying to get out of the parking lot.

The suspect drove down Hylan Drive and ditched the Jeep in the Wegmans parking lot. He fled on foot to the rear of the plaza and made his way into the beauty school, where he tried to hide in the closet.

The deputy escaped with minor injuries and will be OK.

The suspect's name has not been released.
