UPDATE: Shoplifting Suspect Hit by Car, Killed on I-390 Identified

UPDATE: Gates police have announced the identity of the shoplifting suspect who died last week when he ran onto I-390 while trying to escape from police and was hit by a car.

Police say he was 33-year-old Michael Hastings of Rochester, a man who had 19 criminal arrests on his record dating back to 2019.

At the time of last week's incident, Hastings was wanted on a number of active warrants and was also carrying drug paraphernalia.

A shoplifting incident ended with the suspect dead after he ran onto I-390 and was hit by a car in Gates.

Gates police were called shortly after noon for a theft at the Spencerport Road Aldi store.

They spotted the suspect on Lyell Avenue, standing on the bridge over the 390 expressway.

When they approached, he ran down the embankment to the highway onto 390, where he was struck.

Despite the first aid, the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

The State Attorney General's Office will now investigate.
