Rochester police have identified 38-year -old Akintumbe Campbell of Rochester as the man that was shot and killed by police in an encounter on Thurston Road.
They say Campbell was trying to break into a vehicle around 7:30 last night at Thurston Road and Ernestine Street, when an officer approached to frisk him and was knocked down. As Campbell runs from the officers, they can be heard telling him to drop his gun. He was shot when he didn't.
A handgun was found near the body.
No officers were hurt, and those officers involved are now on leave during an RPD internal investigation.
The state Attorney General's Office will also probe the shooting, as is standard when an officer causes a death.
