Unsanctioned Strike Continues at Several WNY Prisons

An unsanctioned strike is expected to continue at three Western New York prisons, and could expand to more.

Corrections officers set up makeshift pickets at Collins Correctional in Erie County, Elmira Correctional in Chemung County, and Groveland Correctional in Livingston County.

They're protesting working conditions, including mandatory overtime and increasing violence toward officers.

The Albany Times-Union reports the corrections officers union denied an effort by some of its members to set up a strike vote earlier this month.

The pickets come just days after the lockdown at Collins.

They also some after Corrections Commissioner Daniel Martuscello called for a 30% reduction in the number of corrections positions at prisons statewide.
