Syracuse University confirms in a news release a story that was first reported by ESPN: it has fired Coach Babers following last night's disappointing loss to Georgia Tech. Babers had one regular season game remaining in his eighth season as the Orange head coach.
The school says Tight Ends Coach Nunzio Campanile will coach out the season in Babers' place. The Orange need one more win to be eligible for a bowl game.
SU gave no official reason for firing Babers, who was recently said to have "multiple years" left on his contract. There's no word on what this will cost the university. SU says it will mount a national search for a new head coach.
