The Rochester City School District is scrambling to rewrite its proposed $862 million budget for the next academic year.
The first version was rejected by state-appointed monitor Shelley Jallow because it would have used at least $30 million from savings to bring the budget into balance.
Jallow told the school board last week it was unacceptable that savings would have to be tapped in a year the district is getting windfalls in aid from the state and federal government.
Jallow is urging the district to cut staff and consolidate buildings.
A school consolidation plan was shelved earlier this year.
