Rochester City Council Asked to Approve Guaranteed Basic Income Program

Rochester City Council is being asked to approve an experimental Guaranteed Basic Income program.

The proposal came from former Mayor Lovely Warren on her final day in office.

In the first year, the program would provide $500 per month to 175 city families who live at, or below, 200 percent of the federal poverty level.

In the second year, the program would provide the same amount to another 175 families.

Warren said the program would cost $2.2 million and would be funded with money from the federal government under the American Rescue Plan.
