A collection of rare photographs of Susan B. Anthony will be auctioned off in September. David Whitcomb, a Canandaigua-based lawyer, bought a three-story building on Seneca Street in December. He discovered a photography studio in the property's third floor apartment. There were hundreds of vintage items in the studio including photographs, framed pictures, photography equipment and boxes of materials. Among the items for sale are rare photos of women's rights activist. The contents once belonged to James Ellery Hale, a photographer who worked in downtown Geneva between 1892 and 1920. Hale was famous for his portraits of leaders of the suffragist movement. The photo of Anthony was taken months before she died. The auction, to be held in person and online, is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. on Sept. 18. Starting bids range from $25 to $5,000. An open house is set to take place the night before the auction and a preview will begin at 1 p.m., two hours before the auction is scheduled to begin. Aaron Kirvan of Once Source Auctions earlier this year estimated that the collection could fetch up to $100,000.
