The central laboratory at the University of Rochester Medical Center is one of five in the state that will assist state efforts to identify variants of the coronavirus.
The state Department of Health is partnering with the labs to expand the genetic sequencing of specimens positive for the virus that causes COVID-19.
The labs have sequencing expertise and experience, as well as capacity and access to positive specimens from large areas in the state, outside of New York City.
