The chief administrative judge for Rochester-area courts is stepping down...apologizing for a 1988 photo that shows him at a costume party in blackface.
In a statement released today, Craig Doran says he appeared as "a well-known public figure of color" at the Halloween party. Doran says he's deeply sorry for doing that, and did not comprehend at the time the hurtful nature of his actions. He says "I know now that an act of this nature is considered to be racist."
Doran says this does not reflect his belief and principals.
Although he's stepping back from the administrative role, Doran says he will continue to serve as a State Supreme Court judge.
There's no word yet on who will take Doran's place as chief administrative judge.
