County Legislator Flagler-Mitchell Responds to Charges of Sexual Abuse

Monroe County Legislator Ernest Flagler-Mitchell is hearing new demands for his resignation -- this time from his allies in the legislature.

Republican Monroe County Legislature President Dr. Joe Carbone is now joining Democrats in calling for Legislator Ernest Flagler-Mitchell to resign following numerous allegations of sexual abuse from 13 women.

Carbone says Republicans worked behind the scenes to encourage Flagler-Mitchell to resign, but he refused.

Republican leaders issued the statement after the new allegation yesterday that Flagler-Mitchell asked in his office for sexual favors from a client who asked for his help with a Child Protective Services case. The woman has audio recordings of their conversation.

In a statement yesterday, Flagler-Mitchell says he’s always been one to help people who call on him and that’s what he attempted to do in this instance. He says “unfortunately, we were unable to resolve this individual’s situation favorably, and now she has launched false allegations against me.”

Flager-Mitchell says he has had moments of marital infidelity, but these are personal matters that he and his wife are working through. He called on people to respect his privacy at a critical time.

Earlier this week, the Republicans blocked a censure vote and said Flagler-Mitchell's fate should be left to the voters.

The latest complaint was filed this week with the state human rights office and the district attorney is investigating.
