New York Attorney General Leticia James is pushing a new bill called the Police Accountability Act, that aims to specify when cops are justified in the use of force.
She notes the legislation would codify such standards at the state level, all while federal lawmakers pursue a similar track following the death of George Floyd.
AG James argues this law isn't about split-second decisions in which cops themselves or members of the public are in danger, noting law enforcement needs to have protections in those situations.
