Governor Cuomo has signed a new law reforming solitary confinement in state prisons.
The new law limits the amount of time an inmate can spend in solitary to 15 days.
It also defines and reduces the number of disciplinary infractions that can be punished with solitary.
And it exempts vulnerable populations including the young, elderly, pregnant women, and people with disabilities or serious mental illness.
Supporters of the law say long periods in solitary can cause lasting trauma.
