Area Lawmakers Proposing Legislation Called 'Daniel's Law'

Area lawmakers are proposing what they call Daniel's Law -- a state legislative response to the death of Daniel Prude after he was restrained by Rochester Police.

Assemblyman Harry Bronson says it would establish statewide and regional mental health response councils -- allowing mental health professionals to respond to mental health and substance abuse emergencies.

State Senator Samra Brouk says it means people who most need essential, compassionate, mental health services will get them.

The mental health response units would be trained to de-escalate mental health and substance abuse emergencies.

The bill would also require 911 dispatchers to be trained to properly dispatch the proper response for the call for help.
