Monroe County Legislature Overrides Bello Vetoes

Monroe County Executive Adam Bello says the County Legislature is prioritizing their power and political games over the residents of the County.

He slammed last night's vote by the legislature to override his vetoes of two budget amendments that were approved earlier this week.

One creates a $2.5 million "community contingency fund" that the legislature can tap for unexpected needs.

Republican Legislative President Joe Carbone says the fund originated in a meeting with Bello in exchange for unanimous passage of his budget.

Bello says it's an election year "slush fund."

Although he talked with lawmakers about where they could find the money for it, he denies supporting the idea.

The other amendment reverses staffing changes at the Board of Elections planned by Election Commissioner Jackie Ortiz.

She wanted to eliminate two positions and downgrade another.

Ortiz claims the amendment is illegal, and says she will move ahead as if the amendment didn't happen.

Her critics in the legislature say the job cuts were unfair to the people of color in those jobs.
