Wayne County Sheriff Barry Virts has told county Republican leaders he will retire at the end of next year.
He is currently serving his third term as sheriff, but will not seek a fourth.
He says his decision will allow interested candidates to emerge before next year's election.
Virts will turn 65 next year.
