Council Members Seek to Overturn New Police Station Development

Three members of the Rochester City Council have submitted legislation seeking to overturn a recent vote to build a new Goodman Section Police Station and Neighborhood Service Center on East Main Street.

Council President Loretta Scott, plus Councilmembers Mitch Gruber and Mary Lupien, want to reverse the legislation that authorized $12.5 million in borrowing for the project. They want to halt any awarding of contracts.

The legislation was passed less than a month ago by a split vote. But since council voted on August 18th, the death of Daniel Prude came to light. Scott says that and the resignation of the entire RPD command staff should lead council to reconsider the appropriateness of the project.

The City had spent five years in planning to return to a neighborhood-based patrol section model, and the new section headquarters is to be the last step in that process.
