State Sales Tax Down Nearly 33%

The State Comptroller's Office is confirming that sales tax collections for local governments fell by nearly a third in May compared with the same period last year. That's more confirmation that local governments will have to make budget cuts to close the revenue shortage in their next budgets.

Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli says the sharp decline in revenue collections was widespreqd around the state, hitting nearly every county. Sales taxes provide vital funding for local government operations in New York.
