Lake Ontario Has Peaked Early

The International Lake Ontario - St. Lawrence River Board says Lake Ontario's levels have already peaked for the spring and are on their way back down. The board says the lake peaked on May 5th at 247.38 feet...and now has fallen by two inches. Levels are down to where Plan 2014 says they ought to be.

Because of this, the board says it's re-examing how much water to let out of the lake through the Moses-Saunders Dam and may reduce the flow, which has been causing problems for ships on the St. Lawrence Seaway. The board also says its special authorization to release record amounts of water during last year's flooding has expired. But they say outflows will remain fairly high because the water flowing down from the upper Great Lakes is still higher than usual.
