Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren has formally presented her budget proposal to the City Council. It is the most challenging year for the City since Warren took office.
Mayor Warren says the city relies on three major revenue sources: property tax, sales tax and state aid.
She says in the next fiscal year, sales tax revenue is expected to decline by 15 percent - or over 24 million dollars and state aid could be cut by an estimated 17.6 million dollars.
Mayor Warren says since the coronavirus crisis, the city is looking at a budget gap of about 65 million dollars.
Mayor Warren says the city saved about 16 million dollars through the furloughs that were announced last week, but that savings weren't enough to bridge the gap.
She announced today that her budget proposes a "modest property tax increase" that will cost the typical homeowner about 133 dollars a year.
Mayor Warren says her proposed budget will not impact essential services including city police and fire departments.
City council will vote on the budget June 16th.
