An analysis of the state budget shows what Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli calls a “dire outlook” for the state fiscal year.
Governor Cuomo said in his Wednesday briefing that the state is looking at a $61 Billion revenue shortfall because of losses from COVID-19, plus the money New York has had to pay out for testing and tracing in fighting the pandemic. DiNapoli says that means sweeping budget cuts to essential services provided by the state, schools and local governments.
The comptroller says more than $8 billion will be cut from aid to localities, with similar large reductions in State Operations. People from school children to the aging may suffer loss of services. Programs that lessen New Yorkers’ property tax burden and fund police may be cut.
