A design problem has cropped up with the state's new license plates.
Spectrum News reports that county clerks were told that the plates are being recalled because it is difficult for them to be read by cameras on state highways.
The plates were delivered to local offices last month but have not been issued to drivers. The state DMV says they eventually will be reissued.
The new plates include the state motto, "Excelsior" and depictions of Niagara Falls and the Manhattan skyline.
