Terry Dade in Talks to Leave Rochester Schools

Rochester City School Superintendent Terry Dade confirms he's begun talking with district officials about whether he should leave.

Sources told WHAM 1180's Bob Lonsberry that Dade asked his attorney to discuss a possible departure after he was forced to produce a budget that calls for $87 million dollars in reductions. Dade came on the job in June and was immediately confronted by the discovery that the district had overspent by tens of millions of dollars before he arrived.

Dade says it's likely the school board won't approve his budget before May 7th...and he says he hasn't been able to bring about the improved academic outcomes and other changes he wanted for the RCSD. He said he hasn't been given the opportunity to do what he was hired to do.

Dade says it's likely he won't be in Rochester when school starts again in the Fall. He says the district needs a state-appointed monitor who will be tough and able to weigh in heavily to move the district forward.

Last week, Superintendent Dade proposed a budget for the next school year that eliminates 280 teaching positions and 60 other positions. The school board is scheduled to vote on the proposed cuts at a meeting next month, but board members refused in a committee meeting this week to approve the cuts, arguing instead for favorite programs to be restored.
