Senator Schumer says the Army Corps of Engineers needs to make quick use of new funds to attack harmful algae in New York's lakes.
A recent spending bill includes a total of $40 million for two programs -- one to control the plants and another to study better ways to control them.
Schumer says the blooms in Conesus, Honeoye and Canandaigua lakes -- among others -- threaten communities, drinking water sources and outdoor recreation.
The algae can produce fatal toxins if ingested by people, pets and aquatic life.
