Lawmakers and Law Enforcement Officials Want Delay of Bail Reform Law

More local lawmakers and law enforcement officials want the state to delay the start of the new bail reform law.

State Senator Pam Helming, Ontario County District Attorney Jim Ritts, Wayne County District Attorney Mike Calarco, and Waterloo Police Chief Jason Godley held a news conference today.

The law is set to take effect January 1, but they want changes they say would protect the victims of crime.

Critics of the law say it removes discretion by judges that could keep suspects in jail who are likely to cause more trouble if they go free.

Supporters say the end of bail requirements ends discrimination against the poor.
