Monroe County Legislature President Joe Carbone says the GOP wants to sit down and negotiate with incoming County Executive, Democrat Adam Bello, about legislation to limit his power. Bello says that's not how the system of passing legislation is supposed to work...and that he's not county executive yet. He says the proposal has to start over in January after he takes office.
Republicans have drawn strong community backlash after suddenly introducing a package of legislation to strip the county executive of the power to appoint department heads, some lower-level officials and the county attorney. Bello said this wouldn't have happened if Republican Cheryl Dinolfo had won re-election.
Bello held a news conference late this afternoon saying this legislation should wait until he's county executive.
Bello says he ran on changing county government and might actually agree with some of the GOP plans to limit the executive's power if they're brought in the right way. But for now, he called for the to be tabled.
