Investigators continue to gather evidence at the site of what used to be 64 Illinois Street in Rochester...the house that exploded Wednesday night in a massive natural gas explosion that was felt a mile away.
In an update Thursday afternoon, Rochester Fire Chief Willie Jackson says the main gas pipe coming into the house had been "compromised"...although he didn't want to go as far as to say the blast was deliberate. He also didn’t say how it had been tampered with, other than to say it didn’t have its normal configuration.
The chief also didn't release the identity of the body found in the home's basement last night by a building collapse team. It hasn't been formally identified yet.
Firefighters were called to Illinois Street last night by RG&E Crews who in turn had been called by neighbors to investigate the smell of natural gas in the area. They became concerned when the person in the house wouldn't open the door. The house exploded just as fire crews arrived.
