"Operation Hard Hat" Issues Numerous Tickets

New York State Police and the Department of Transportation say they issued 112 tickets last week during "Operation Hardhat" -- a joint initiative in which troopers dressed like highway workers to catch people violating the new "move over" law and otherwise endangering highway crews.

The investigation focused on the Rochester and Hornell regions through numerous highway work zones. DOT Spokesman Jordan Guerrin says the point was to keep highway workers safe, not to issue more tickets. Tickets were issued for speeding and especially distracted driving, using cellphones and failing to obey a flagger.

Troopers say they'll roll out this operation statewide in the coming months.
